What a waste of time! Haven’t been more disappointed by going to the Opera over the last 10 years. A complete disaster in terms of directing and scenography. Such lack of understanding about stage directing seems absurd to describe: unbearable stillness on stage, unreasonably motivated actions, awkward gestures and the Opera choir's presents on stage added no value.
Scenography was tasteless, pretentious and plain boring. First act was the most chaotic, second act looked like a large commercial photo booth, third act unveiled a split stage by a hidious wall of gray wallpaper (something you would see in soviet beauty salons) and for the final act seems the scenographer just gave up. Some interesting elements were used, but sadly couldn’t save, what is clearly lack of concept and taste.
As for costume design, the singer of the leading role of Adriana Lecouvreur was dressed as a middle aged secretary. I suggest you change the fluorescent pink costume and invest in a voluptuous wig to make the audience believe, that she is the main love interest and should be favoured by the audience. A fantastic Opera singer should be appropriately dressed for her role.
Overall, it was such a shame to see our Opera singers’ talent go to waste. I feel sorry for everyone involved.
